Hello, I've got a couple questions about becoming a Conductor.

I applied for a Conductor Job with Norfolk Southern located in Manassas, VA about two weeks ago. They haven't called back yet. Should I give them a call, or just keep looking? I don't have any real experience aside from a little college and a quick stint at Wal-Mart. On a side note, how does the process of getting hired work? I would need to relocate, and I said on my application I was completely fine doing so, but I just want to get the timing straight in my head, as I live nearly 4 hours away from Manassas. I'd up and move now, but this job possibility is the only reason I have for going into that region.

Also, I know they hair test, and it's got me worried I don't smoke much, I don't particularly care for it, and I can live without, but I have smoked three times rather recently (most recent being 1 month ago, and the first time being sometime around the end of summer.) Am I fucked? A friend who does that sort of thing much more often that I said to cut my hair as short as possible, but I think they would frown upon that. I did get a haircut about a week ago, but it wasn't too short or anything.

Thank you,

>> No.132092

Don't waste your time calling. You probably didn't get the job. Freight is a little slow everywhere right now.

As far as hair testing goes, not everyone does it. For me it's always been piss tests.

If you were to get hired you'd go to wherever NS does all their training at for a few weeks, then you'd go to where you'll eventually work at and do several months of on job training. After which you'll have the glorious task of being a slave to your phone.

Just giving you a heads up, this industry isn't for everyone and you won't have much of a life outside work.

There's a small yard in downtown Manassas, and a crew change point not too far south. If you don't get the job, don't bother moving up this way, everything is hideously expensive. Plus if they haven't called you back yet, yeah, you probably didn't get it.

I'm a near-daily toker, and it'd take me about a month and a half to piss clean. Someone who smokes infrequently and gets more exercise could probably piss clean in maybe 3 weeks. Hair testing goes back 90+ days depending on what part of the body they get the hair from. The real question is: why the hell are you smoking weed AT ALL when you're on a job hunt?

So, you're the one who's vying for my position, huh? Well let me tell you bub, I hope one day we can both work for them one day. But right now, not looking good. Spoke to a conductor recently who was going away to train to be an engineer and he said in the area (I'm in southern VA) it doesn't look like they'll be doing much hiring for about a year. Though I will tell you what he told me: keep trying regardless. Keep your papers in their inbox and when it comes time to hire on some people, they'll see that you've been actively trying to get the job, and would probably select you sooner than others. Good luck out there.

Yeah, I've never heard of this working either. Any kind of entry-level postion like this gets thousands of applications these days, so OP is likely getting auto-rejected rather than hand-rejected. Best part, I'm non-agreement and work mostly in the office. Best of luck man.

NS has stated they're cutting 1200 jobs by the end of this year. Likely mostly from the coal fields and T&E, but it will mean less positions are filled after vacancy system wide.

No sense going into emergency at T-34 seconds if the boys have jumped to the clear by T-16 seconds.

>The suit also contended the train was going 15 mph faster than federal guidelines because a safety device at the rear of the train was not operational.

FREDs govern train speed?

>> No.132133

>>132132

>FREDs govern train speed?

I prefer the term EOT, but yes.

No EOT means you're a 30 mph train. Not supposed to depart an initial terminal on any train with more than 4,000 trailing tons without one. You cannot report clear of track authorities without visually seeing the last car in the train, or a qualified employee giving you a roll-by and stating that they see your marker light, flag, or non-operational EOT on the rear.

But back to the other part of your post, almost no engineer will put the train in emergency unless they hit something or are about to run through a switch, over a derail, into cars or engine, or past a signal displaying stop indication. A lot of these new road motors will instantly alert the RTC/dispatcher that the train was placed in emergency and they'll come on the radio asking you why did such. You're going to sound like a jackass when you say "we thought we were going to hit some kid on the tracks, but we didn't"

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>> No.132137

The comment section is very interesting one of the jurors actually comments on the page that they made the decision because the engineer took no action before hitting the boy.

>> No.132139

If the bell was on or he activated the horn then he took action.

>> No.132140

>>132139
That is correct.

It is sensible to take braking action when a collision is imminent, but as we saw, several of the kids were able to get to safety. Another issue is that people don't realize what constitutes proper train handling. It's not as simple as just putting your foot on the brake. For proper dynamic braking(which is the preferred method of braking) you're supposed to notch down once every 3 seconds until you're in idle, then go to setup in the dynamics for 5 or 10 seconds (I can't recall. I'm not an engineer and my rule book is in the car.) then start using the dynamics. Assuming he's in notch 4, that's at least 17 seconds before he's actually braking the train.

That's an awful big commitment to make when someone could just get out of the way. Emergency braking is something that is HIGHLY discouraged as it creates large amounts of in train forces and track stress.

>> No.132141

>>132137
Are they allowed to do that? Down my way, if you went on a news site and commented on what happened in the jury room they'd stick you in the cells for a couple of weeks.
