Does anyone get the feeling they've already got the lay off notices for the conductors ready to send out?

>> No.132385

Feh. They'd fire the engineers, too, if they could.

Note to non-native Anglophones: The word 'engineer' covers both Ingenieur and Engine-user.

The National Transportation Safety Board says an agricultural feed truck hit a train track near Dodge City, Kan., causing the rails to shift and an Amtrak train to derail shortly after midnight on Monday.

More than 30 people were sent to the hospital. The train, heading from Chicago to Los Angeles, was carrying 131 passengers and a crew of 14, Amtrak says.

THESE daredevils risk death every day.
The young men ride on top of trains between Sebokeng kasi and Vereeniging in the Vaal, ducking power lines carrying thousands of volts of electricity.
When the SunTeam visited Houtkop Station this week, several surfers were on the first few carriages of the train coming from Residensia.
They whistled, laughed and waved at Daily Sunfs photographer.
Some passengers were sticking their heads out of the carriages to watch the action.
Although train surfers can be entertaining, there have been many deaths in recent years.
However, Metrorail spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng said train surfing is declining.
gWe are aware that some train surfers are still active and move from one station to another.
gThis used to be a massive problem but the number of people doing it has decreased and the situation has improved,h she said.
gWe have also recently started asking rehabilitated train surfers to educate those still doing it – they know and listen to each other.
gWe have discovered that some of the train surfers are young men who use drugs.h
Mofokeng said Metrorail has educational programmes to discourage surfing and create awareness around the risks, which include death.
gSome of the train surfers are pupils, so we take our safety campaign to schools in the residential areas where our trains operate,h she said.

They have shoes, gloves and are standing on the wooden part. Every bit of insulation counts. 3000V is nasty but it doesn't go too deep compared to say 25kV which only really thick things would help you.
In any case, it's still for the truly suicidal. One step in the wrong place and bzzzzt. There's a video out there of Russian news showing a smoking body in a pantograph.

Out of curiosity, has this type of BS caught on in Japan or have the strong fine scared away any potential 'surfer'?

It's probably a lot rarer, but it likely happens anyway from time to time, just like graffiti on trains in Japan.
Part of that would likely have to do with the way trains are worked. Most trains carry a guard or conductor which means someone in the rear cab of the train watching so riding on the back is largely out of the question. Even for wanman setups, most trains in Japan have large windows between the cabs and passenger areas so someone inside could see unless it was at night on an empty train.
Riding on the top is a possibility but Japan's loading gauge means potentially quite low wire height in some places. That and unless you were out in the countryside, you'd get caught.
I'm sure more than a handful of people want to surf the Shinkansen like that Wolverine movie but low wire height does present a serious danger (as we've seen with someone who went bzzzt on top of a Shinkansen a few months ago). Though there are anchor points and antennas, but they're in places where you'd probably be seen by the conductor in the rear cab anyway.
Someone also went bzzzt while climbing on top of a train under the influence of alcohol. Because they were American, they were made out to be some sort of hero by their own as usual.

I think the fines would just be a small part of things. Railways are mostly private which means they can and will sue you for every yen you have, especially if you being caught causes delays. Then they can hand you over to the cops for some likely jail time.

From what I've seen, no. There just seems to be a cop every now and then patrolling some stations. Beyond that they just have the odd security guard in places. When someone gets minced they call the cops to check it out and get the bureaucratic aspect out of the way.
