3801088 No.132091

Hello, I've got a couple questions about becoming a Conductor.

I applied for a Conductor Job with Norfolk Southern located in Manassas, VA about two weeks ago. They haven't called back yet. Should I give them a call, or just keep looking? I don't have any real experience aside from a little college and a quick stint at Wal-Mart. On a side note, how does the process of getting hired work? I would need to relocate, and I said on my application I was completely fine doing so, but I just want to get the timing straight in my head, as I live nearly 4 hours away from Manassas. I'd up and move now, but this job possibility is the only reason I have for going into that region.

Also, I know they hair test, and it's got me worried I don't smoke much, I don't particularly care for it, and I can live without, but I have smoked three times rather recently (most recent being 1 month ago, and the first time being sometime around the end of summer.) Am I fucked? A friend who does that sort of thing much more often that I said to cut my hair as short as possible, but I think they would frown upon that. I did get a haircut about a week ago, but it wasn't too short or anything.

Thank you,

Don't waste your time calling. You probably didn't get the job. Freight is a little slow everywhere right now.

As far as hair testing goes, not everyone does it. For me it's always been piss tests.

If you were to get hired you'd go to wherever NS does all their training at for a few weeks, then you'd go to where you'll eventually work at and do several months of on job training. After which you'll have the glorious task of being a slave to your phone.

Just giving you a heads up, this industry isn't for everyone and you won't have much of a life outside work.

There's a small yard in downtown Manassas, and a crew change point not too far south. If you don't get the job, don't bother moving up this way, everything is hideously expensive. Plus if they haven't called you back yet, yeah, you probably didn't get it.

I'm a near-daily toker, and it'd take me about a month and a half to piss clean. Someone who smokes infrequently and gets more exercise could probably piss clean in maybe 3 weeks. Hair testing goes back 90+ days depending on what part of the body they get the hair from. The real question is: why the hell are you smoking weed AT ALL when you're on a job hunt?

So, you're the one who's vying for my position, huh? Well let me tell you bub, I hope one day we can both work for them one day. But right now, not looking good. Spoke to a conductor recently who was going away to train to be an engineer and he said in the area (I'm in southern VA) it doesn't look like they'll be doing much hiring for about a year. Though I will tell you what he told me: keep trying regardless. Keep your papers in their inbox and when it comes time to hire on some people, they'll see that you've been actively trying to get the job, and would probably select you sooner than others. Good luck out there.

I've been trying that for six fucking years with BNSF and Amtrak and that shit still hasn't worked.

Yeah, I've never heard of this working either. Any kind of entry-level postion like this gets thousands of applications these days, so OP is likely getting auto-rejected rather than hand-rejected. Having applied for one of my current jobs 4 times, It certainly wasn't my manager (who enthusiastically invited me back) repeatedly denying my application

Dude, they shaved my entire armpit for the drug test. Just one side... and I mean all of it. Just because my haircut was a little short.

Best part, I'm non-agreement and work mostly in the office. Best of luck man.

NS has stated they're cutting 1200 jobs by the end of this year. Likely mostly from the coal fields and T&E, but it will mean less positions are filled after vacancy system wide.
