This German site mentions a rather odd curiosity with the German class 232 diesel loco. If the ETS/HEP generator dies, the dynamic brakes will not work.

that's at least not the strangest thing i've ever heard. something similar, the P32ACDMs can't use their dynamic brakes when running on 3rd rail power.

If I got it right, the HEP generator also powers some of the Ludmilla's own systems and, when in Notch 8, feeds the traction motors along with the main generator.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivpmRZhwyc It can do even better:) 2TE116 series is direct successor of TE109. 2TE116U has boosted 3600 HP version of 5D49.
Interesting fact, this engine design is about 50 years old and still quite actual, new versions of D49 even meet Euro-3 standards.

>>137158 -- Incidentally, there are also classes 241 and 242. I think both have 5D49M engines with ca. 4000-hp output.

It's bending this thread a bit, but here are other engines whose sounds I like:

Right, I forgot that some TE109s were remotorized with modernized D49 engines in 2000-s. Well, actually D49 can handle up to 300 HP per cylinder. For example, the most impressive D49 version was 1D49 equipped on (2)TE136 series, it was V20 engine with 6000 HP output (here I said a bit more >>131677). There also was 1-1D49 for TEP75 and TEP80 but it was more "light duty" because these were built for passenger service. And now there are only memories...
The most boosted version of D49 that is in service nowadays is 21-2D49, V12 3400 HP diesel with EFI for 2TE25K and 2TE25A.
